By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the impact of digital technology on electricity consumption and CO2 emissions
- Understand the different methods used to measure the energy consumption of software
- Measure the energy consumption of a machine, process, or software function
- Reason about the energy impact of software choices (e.g., programming languages, algorithm complexity, data structures, interaction models)
- Make technical choices based on energy consumption (choice of network, video encoding type)
- Model the power consumption of a complex system, e.g. data center
- Consider the energy impact of a new “digital for the environment” type IT system (weigh up the emissions associated with the production of the system against the expected gains from its use)
- Integrate energy consumption criteria into the choice and/or design of an IT system
